<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In January we were excited to get our new studio at cSPACE King Edward, an old sandstone school built in 1912, which has/is being converted into an arts incubator in south Calgary.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Our studio is half of a classroom which was the principal's office in the 70's and so we are calling it the "Principles Office". Some of the original mouldings were kept but essentially it's a blank canvas.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiHMWA1xhWwAuZ-EkKC0CnmRNi6bpcQfqyWDhv3u-UPoCON0GTS35iALwn3ZkWWOsJepJJGVjCFtRi6lH3MvyyGBck1Y2U-qRjAx992EX6DfdGhzH8s0pfNW5pBZZXpaU6vtf_Sk52x1g/s1600/tapemural3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="810" data-original-width="1600" height="322" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiHMWA1xhWwAuZ-EkKC0CnmRNi6bpcQfqyWDhv3u-UPoCON0GTS35iALwn3ZkWWOsJepJJGVjCFtRi6lH3MvyyGBck1Y2U-qRjAx992EX6DfdGhzH8s0pfNW5pBZZXpaU6vtf_Sk52x1g/s1600/tapemural3.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I started with a photoshop mashup to plan and visualize how we would set up the space. I controlled costs by using off the shelf shelving and customizing them with hard wood tops and such.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNHvaMhCveRPnnxvAoa02EQ-7HGOQvYUmCltdlh-vM6THMnOnG0DDdL75qrKP8zzOL6wtxUL5ytW07kaS0ZEevmuMiARzqBONPj7A6JjH7ghW6RPKMR-SQhGVtxQrPyJUwo9PxccFXM8s/s1600/tapemural4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="810" data-original-width="1600" height="322" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNHvaMhCveRPnnxvAoa02EQ-7HGOQvYUmCltdlh-vM6THMnOnG0DDdL75qrKP8zzOL6wtxUL5ytW07kaS0ZEevmuMiARzqBONPj7A6JjH7ghW6RPKMR-SQhGVtxQrPyJUwo9PxccFXM8s/s1600/tapemural4.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I wanted to enclose the sink so it would be less of a focal point and would have a cleaner profile when we have gallery shows. It was a challenge to visualize and find a way to make this happen.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhScpVnFTTvU6ULbBPmKrIXGWd2if9yL2lhskc0C9ob7c9_OSyyOF4Ji6Ic38EmpnuJWG8HapYLvbizRZr9zCcRdq_gCkE9ZjbrloX4tlyyup1LpaYnhzCMdh2NhWOoA1NCpTpeMAxpXHY/s1600/tapemural15.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="810" data-original-width="1600" height="322" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhScpVnFTTvU6ULbBPmKrIXGWd2if9yL2lhskc0C9ob7c9_OSyyOF4Ji6Ic38EmpnuJWG8HapYLvbizRZr9zCcRdq_gCkE9ZjbrloX4tlyyup1LpaYnhzCMdh2NhWOoA1NCpTpeMAxpXHY/s1600/tapemural15.jpg" width="640" /></a>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I painted a feature wall grey which went well with dark brown moulding. I was really keen on the idea of a mural but I didn't want to commit to a hand painted mural or the expense of digital vinyl.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<ahref bi="" bp.blogspot.com="" d2w9xgfi="" ec5yr7_flg4="" https:="" imageanchor="1" s1600="" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" tapemural5.jpg="" yilxroiufzsp42bqdvxa1ffktsz5kwclcbgas=""><img border="0" data-original-height="810" data-original-width="1600" height="322" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCCKmoCi9A3JT_4owyHgqvIHfL21TiUYtP0GqQ3NRoOQjU4EDdMIKG0Fl84Y_1X9acAIad4PGCPfKoTmP7IZfyxSZaJOy46quyskuUEXKbDo2vuBrHUP8AQnJZszPcUgcRwcd9iEvitwk/s1600/tapemural5.jpg" width="640" /></ahref><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The tape drawings were pretty spontaneous. For example originally I wanted to do a big head shape. I did quick sketches in my sketchbook and then guesstimated it's placement on the wall.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi21nzE86p-rHcct_gmN1L8_Zy7_bxvOQcsIXJ9msA9phUaLJ-iQktU7Q0qWqVwaHzut5epjPao84Q-cvOuuisB3myPo-B-aCn9XO7cwVvW9oJDgdpalagVmvvYuqJhEme85KncpXttPps/s1600/tapemural6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="810" data-original-width="1600" height="322" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi21nzE86p-rHcct_gmN1L8_Zy7_bxvOQcsIXJ9msA9phUaLJ-iQktU7Q0qWqVwaHzut5epjPao84Q-cvOuuisB3myPo-B-aCn9XO7cwVvW9oJDgdpalagVmvvYuqJhEme85KncpXttPps/s1600/tapemural6.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Sometimes this didn't work out and I "erased" the original designs. For this design I wanted something more whimsical and something that would utilize the wall space better.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPUsqZeTzhwMvod6r4BBTEWOB4Pvv1dho2cakf4SQiZ6zw5qrSLnS7C4fMg9qdFETSGRst5lBQ6HymlMJcZPUes4Nj35gPQZlsBDhnA_B76hK8rwTQHNxkE8sZXlowvdIrZ7cHwN_OafM/s1600/tapemural7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="810" data-original-width="1600" height="322" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPUsqZeTzhwMvod6r4BBTEWOB4Pvv1dho2cakf4SQiZ6zw5qrSLnS7C4fMg9qdFETSGRst5lBQ6HymlMJcZPUes4Nj35gPQZlsBDhnA_B76hK8rwTQHNxkE8sZXlowvdIrZ7cHwN_OafM/s1600/tapemural7.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It usually took me a day or two to do each design element. The tools I used were ladders, levels, scissors, rulers, and photography tape. I had to redo a character because it didn't read as a brain.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAT1S85QayVDsb_Ow3cjQQxJhn5dr2UpIRcHrpfJZzhWANo3zcK8yxn2zTPs9TAmP9GS00VkCahNZuGxeWgtWivYC-T98hqr-Piux30lU0EJBZBvUpfF70ZtH48jtIc7Ssz-fiz6h6M8M/s1600/tapemural8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="810" data-original-width="1600" height="322" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAT1S85QayVDsb_Ow3cjQQxJhn5dr2UpIRcHrpfJZzhWANo3zcK8yxn2zTPs9TAmP9GS00VkCahNZuGxeWgtWivYC-T98hqr-Piux30lU0EJBZBvUpfF70ZtH48jtIc7Ssz-fiz6h6M8M/s1600/tapemural8.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I originally saw tape murals done at an illustration conference, Icon 7. You can do much more organic line if you plan and cut your tape, but it was much quicker and easier to use geometric line.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMfSyfPvnV6mcDNdxTf0AnI6YeJYtyUFkdAXsFhQOrgNspzmXPGViVUrq6fivNyxQo5-KkHqftGORVC-G4MoINc_whNc_QFV57lX_9sTHN32qgfH57Z6G5d82JN9jiKcU4JVRFx3jaAuQ/s1600/tapemural9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="810" data-original-width="1600" height="322" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMfSyfPvnV6mcDNdxTf0AnI6YeJYtyUFkdAXsFhQOrgNspzmXPGViVUrq6fivNyxQo5-KkHqftGORVC-G4MoINc_whNc_QFV57lX_9sTHN32qgfH57Z6G5d82JN9jiKcU4JVRFx3jaAuQ/s1600/tapemural9.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The "SHARE" design was an illustration I did years ago and reused here. Art's Gym was a name considered for the studio but it was already used. I plan to use this straight lined style in other illos.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnfuuwolAh_mTbHrwhE7aG8T1nHaDck1bOQh0p45TnVSGGbpMdZlt0GO0aPmtKd5wLKr-u6FQa2QgqmllW7b2dIqsesYdYb-9DMrxak4bOSeX4qqIQQpSGzEf17saaKTJFZN2L75VSwcw/s1600/tapemural10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="810" data-original-width="1600" height="322" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnfuuwolAh_mTbHrwhE7aG8T1nHaDck1bOQh0p45TnVSGGbpMdZlt0GO0aPmtKd5wLKr-u6FQa2QgqmllW7b2dIqsesYdYb-9DMrxak4bOSeX4qqIQQpSGzEf17saaKTJFZN2L75VSwcw/s1600/tapemural10.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I enjoyed working with wood, and real wood was surprisingly economical. But I also used veneer plywood because of the ease, and I also like how it looks when lamented – like around the sink.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilY8AP233nd0sMutp-LOd3rFoNNjKGXYhSQsKqDvXgVXu3BAH8QthGQj9DnPXTA5DJmpGcFoS3mZNaiYKwVcDsnhRJB69qqyHtskQYZgnns7DuDR8ObH-TG2JIhQzBD6Dp00mgSNsYWxo/s1600/tapemural11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="810" data-original-width="1600" height="322" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilY8AP233nd0sMutp-LOd3rFoNNjKGXYhSQsKqDvXgVXu3BAH8QthGQj9DnPXTA5DJmpGcFoS3mZNaiYKwVcDsnhRJB69qqyHtskQYZgnns7DuDR8ObH-TG2JIhQzBD6Dp00mgSNsYWxo/s1600/tapemural11.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I also did a bunch of furniture hacking including these shelves which I added table tops, wheels and wood doors. I had some old beat up benches that I painted and added a top to match.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXtXiFJSMJQo9AWGqZGQDBpA-bzfCfrPqzpfQq2RM7z9r-jddZiT-2ojMtRTRRNB-nomM6FpdJxkxnuIzistxgUsFFmBLI_8qzToaBHUX9cHmJGDk88APbEsIjRrouZmE7xpT1ZQopo8k/s1600/tapemural12.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="810" data-original-width="1600" height="322" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXtXiFJSMJQo9AWGqZGQDBpA-bzfCfrPqzpfQq2RM7z9r-jddZiT-2ojMtRTRRNB-nomM6FpdJxkxnuIzistxgUsFFmBLI_8qzToaBHUX9cHmJGDk88APbEsIjRrouZmE7xpT1ZQopo8k/s1600/tapemural12.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I put wheels on everything so the studio can be modular and multifunctional. A space where we can do work, put on shows, workshops, or collaborative projects.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTBZilQI0WSt2cq9XXjzm7vWBoIwUaq6gbfeUslDtAdRR9G9siyQ6GqYoR341pjLXJmilxASztXJCuvO1_eZcpgifsM6fUwM_YiAI2VBOZaeNAZdpzF5Vl1gOU1H31GucjLyjOM0XP_9k/s1600/tapemural16.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="810" data-original-width="1600" height="322" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTBZilQI0WSt2cq9XXjzm7vWBoIwUaq6gbfeUslDtAdRR9G9siyQ6GqYoR341pjLXJmilxASztXJCuvO1_eZcpgifsM6fUwM_YiAI2VBOZaeNAZdpzF5Vl1gOU1H31GucjLyjOM0XP_9k/s1600/tapemural16.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Many people that come in to the studio are curious what tape I use, some assume electrical tape which would be hell to work with. I use old school photo tape and it cost under 100 bucks total.</div>
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC6eCihwaqB515utth7HK2hn4MtB5-90h3rQGJgykFPiBHIE1foAtTneIoklEo84rshRUZUAcrrVNleU1Ad9f91dIvB5jPDylAU_WmGHmx0QUrbd61Kg2OHj-CCJUVnZrc-sRULGxC5zU/s1600/tapemural14.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="810" data-original-width="1600" height="322" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC6eCihwaqB515utth7HK2hn4MtB5-90h3rQGJgykFPiBHIE1foAtTneIoklEo84rshRUZUAcrrVNleU1Ad9f91dIvB5jPDylAU_WmGHmx0QUrbd61Kg2OHj-CCJUVnZrc-sRULGxC5zU/s1600/tapemural14.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is how it looks as of today. Now that the studio is mostly organized we are now focusing on organizing ourselves(!) and our mission plan as an incubator for all things illustrative. The tape mural will be up until late August. After which we will need the wall space for some exciting group shows and collaborative projects in the fall!</div>

The creative process of making an illustration can probably seem pretty straight forward, your inspired, you draw it, color it, and then it's printed for others to enjoy. But more often than not each step has it's challenges which sometimes can be overwhelming.<br />
<br />
(1) It's a challenge just coming up with a unique idea that effectively visualizes the words and adds another layer of story telling. (2) A pretty picture is one thing but being able to clearly communicate storytelling with pictures so the viewer (especially young viewers) understands is tricky. (3) Being able to faithfully translate the idea in your head onto a piece of paper is no piece of cake. (4) Convincing others your idea is good, such as your editor, art director, writer, and sales department (in the case of cover illustrations) is probably the least appreciated but one of the most daunting. (5) Simply being able to finish the artwork to the level you desire in the limited time you have. And (6) The printed book art actually looking like the original art.<br />
<br />
These are not the only challenges but you get the sense of some of hoops it takes to complete an illustration, and it adds another layer of appreciation when I see an amazing illustration in print - <i>not only is it a wonderful image but the creators were able to navigate all the pitfalls to actually make it happen.</i><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVOHqc5Ln3V9195KwtCrFO8PnZ2KFOFU1CX_qXuYYclexpZP_ChiTvmKUZ4Wb0CITIMD8Iq12liXNe8RPTJxtFDvPw2PGPeKIYNTB37BB1btk9y_pnZvRTHNZj5qourt43daRoVDEKcgI/s1600/placestobe1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="844" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVOHqc5Ln3V9195KwtCrFO8PnZ2KFOFU1CX_qXuYYclexpZP_ChiTvmKUZ4Wb0CITIMD8Iq12liXNe8RPTJxtFDvPw2PGPeKIYNTB37BB1btk9y_pnZvRTHNZj5qourt43daRoVDEKcgI/s1600/placestobe1.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Comparing the above sketch and finished art for <b>places to be muddy</b> here are some things to note.<br />
<br />
(1) The guy in the yellow boots sports a nifty bicycle hat in the finished art but not the sketch, perhaps it was a late inspiration or someone else's suggestion.<br />
<br />
(2) If you are familiar with Renata's work she doesn't normally put clothing on her animals, only when they serve a specific purpose. In this case the rubber boots help define the setting and characters roles, as well as enrich the sentiment of the storytelling.<br />
<br />

Comparing the above sketch and finished art for <b>places to be careful</b> here are some things to note.<br />
<br />
(1) How change can make old ideas new. In a classic hollywood movie the distraction would have been a book, but now it's cellphones – which makes this slapstick concept relevant again.<br />
<br />
(2) I was worried that the level of slapstick was going to be a bit too much drama for a picture book, but maybe adding the safety cone into the final art made it acceptable? (also no orange bicycle hat here either)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghIuS9YoAwPqY_H40xIsNeaQc1Kq5I1nonr_3-O7RtZ-YiaeKc4alFHdru6a3AYFVZgpzxtzh5rQa4THESPf1rB85cvLJ_lagqoN55kS6INPwIVSkECv3S_CUMAf8icfx39-tlfxR7WBU/s1600/placestobe3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="844" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghIuS9YoAwPqY_H40xIsNeaQc1Kq5I1nonr_3-O7RtZ-YiaeKc4alFHdru6a3AYFVZgpzxtzh5rQa4THESPf1rB85cvLJ_lagqoN55kS6INPwIVSkECv3S_CUMAf8icfx39-tlfxR7WBU/s1600/placestobe3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Comparing the above sketch and finished art for <b>places to be bored</b> here are some things to note.<br />
<br />
(1) The other main character has been added to the finished art, seated by himself in the ferris wheel. Continuing the buddy dynamic as well as adding another subtle layer of story – without his friend to enjoy the ride with, is he bored too? Renata often adds these extra elements intuitively as she finishes the art.<br />
<br />
(2) There are several other background elements not in the drawing which were added later. The framed unicorn picture was added at my request. I've been working on writing a unicorn story and thought it would be neat to have Renata draw a fantasy character which might one day have it's own book ... maybe.<br />

We've also been lucky to have the opportunity to be included in a new creative incubator called <a href="http://cspacekingedward.com/">cSPACE King Edward</a>. It is a historical sandstone school house built in 1912 that has been painstakingly rejuvenated to be a home to artists and cultural organizations. In May I am hoping to combine these creative endeavours with an exhibition and open house at the studio in this wonderful building. We've named our studio The Principles Office inspired by the fact that it was the Principals Office starting around the 1950's. I am hoping The Principles Office will truly be a place to be creative, for ourselves and others. Our goal is it will be a place to celebrate and collaborate creativity in illustration, design and the like.<br />

She is a big fan of the blog so it was a special treat. In it Marsha mentions that Renata had asked her to change the animal species of one of the characters, the Dormouse. It is interesting to read the emotional adjustment that Marsha had to make, which Renata super appreciated. (plus the replacement character turned out to be one of Renata's new favourite characters!)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioOlhjhBncUFlPFKRZSmegD52A8xq89TjtRwbIJKBLu_bk4agYc9WAJXvhzDa0K3AXfhARSaj97v4EiD_b6HpxeXtJGpmeim_jf6GoDRTTpeiJ4f4a4p_7A_hdqlkUw0rheIlegG8rU8Y/s1600/dormouse1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioOlhjhBncUFlPFKRZSmegD52A8xq89TjtRwbIJKBLu_bk4agYc9WAJXvhzDa0K3AXfhARSaj97v4EiD_b6HpxeXtJGpmeim_jf6GoDRTTpeiJ4f4a4p_7A_hdqlkUw0rheIlegG8rU8Y/s1600/dormouse1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Further to that, I thought it would be fun to discuss why Renata asked for the casting change? And it's an excellent segue to introducing Renata's next book, <b><i>Dormouse Dreams</i></b> written by<a href="http://www.karmawilson.com/"> Karma Wilson</a>. By the title you can perhaps see Renata was worried about having the same character in two unrelated books in a row. In truth, Renata's characters are like her own little shakespearean acting troupe with the same cast of rogues appearing in different roles for each of her books. But because Dormouse, actually Dormice, are the stars of this newest book she was worried about overlap.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4LIcdyrx2eC1KXQpMPtWUOE3l63DtC5EroUSCJ2iCdOPFuXeo2RsjXqwPqtQRzDKDIDsVnC37EP7rlGHGYB8tdh-Ei9eqX4g-lls3skuqCGBgaP22431hNLX9CXmUm1ViVKZQ6hrrdFE/s1600/dormouse4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4LIcdyrx2eC1KXQpMPtWUOE3l63DtC5EroUSCJ2iCdOPFuXeo2RsjXqwPqtQRzDKDIDsVnC37EP7rlGHGYB8tdh-Ei9eqX4g-lls3skuqCGBgaP22431hNLX9CXmUm1ViVKZQ6hrrdFE/s1600/dormouse4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Interestingly this is not the only parallel between the books. Waiting for Snow's central theme is patience, and everyone involved in this project had to show a little patience in it's development process. Dormouse was actually started before Waiting for Snow. This delay worked out in one way because the two books also have a seasonal parallel. Waiting for Snow involves waiting for snow and the anticipation of the winter season. While Dormouse has a background narrative, that literally, is the transition from winter to spring, and the anticipation of spring.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzoqtUsbBuT7xLeugTF2kCiU-iZracdIYuO6oOpiNgRluHtQMNNqZw7-pjkdhc4v9Peb-dgjEm3vjwidv30psI9aJ3moTZNri3CfhnbRGGPa8E3tireiMDXwJuka4zESMsb9-dzBaj0PE/s1600/dormouse2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzoqtUsbBuT7xLeugTF2kCiU-iZracdIYuO6oOpiNgRluHtQMNNqZw7-pjkdhc4v9Peb-dgjEm3vjwidv30psI9aJ3moTZNri3CfhnbRGGPa8E3tireiMDXwJuka4zESMsb9-dzBaj0PE/s1600/dormouse2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I've noticed each of Renata's books have it's own unique character. Little Panda has a formal and classical feeling that reflects its asian art influences, The Quiet Book has a simplified and minimalist style that reflects the frankness of the narrative. Once Upon a Memory's art is more refined with an exactness to detail that works well with it's crisp poetic style of writing, and the art for Waiting for Snow has a playfulness that builds on the playful tone of the text. So what about Dormouse Dreams? Dreamy obviously, but I would say Karma Wilson's are some of lushest and loveliest words Renata has drawn from. The result is some of the most lush and lovely illustrations by Renata.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
The challenge with Dormouse Dreams was to parallel the real world and dream world and based on the reviews Renata has been able to accomplish this, something which can be potentially tricky to communicate to young viewers. You can check out one of the reviews below and very soon the book which comes out officially February 7th!<br />

No one likes baths. What a waste of time! There’s so much more important stuff to do! Plus, baths are super dangerous for a number of reasons. You want me to list a few? Most household accidents happen in the bathroom. Scientific fact! A kid in Texas turned into a prune after taking a bath. Scientific fact! If you need more evidence, allow me to point you to an excellent book called 101 Reasons Why I'm Not Taking a Bath. It’s full of insightful and logical reasons why you should definitely not be subjected to this useless ritual.<br />

The second in a three-book series,You Are Two is a charming read-aloud that addresses the baby directly. Supersaturated ink-and-wash illustrations play with pattern and perspective and lend a contemporary, artistic feel to the book. The diverse group of babies pictured comes to life on the page and adds to the text’s warmth and broad appeal. <span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"><br /></span>

Gertie Reece Foy is 100% Not-From-Concentrate awesome. She has a daddy who works on an oil rig, a great-aunt who always finds the lowest prices at the Piggly Wiggly, and two loyal best friends. So when her absent mother decides to move away from their small town, Gertie sets out on her greatest mission yet: becoming the best fifth grader in the universe to show her mother exactly what she'll be leaving behind. There's just one problem: Seat-stealing new girl Mary Sue Spivey wants to be the best fifth grader, too. And there is simply not enough room at the top for the two of them.<br />

Fish and herons, turtles and dragonflies, beaver lodges and lily pads—a multitude of wonders enchant the child-narrator, her loving grandpa and any other nature lovers along for the ride in this tender, beautifully illustrated picture book. Baby ducklings ride their mama’s back; an osprey rises with a silver fish clutched in her talons; a loon cries in a star-flecked night. Rhythmic, rhyming quatrains carry the story forward in clean paddle strokes of evocative imagery.</div>

Lister and Lester are identical twins who do identical things. But their constant striving to outdo each other means their little brother, Liam, is always left out. When Lester’s Lemonade Universe and Lister’s Lemonade Multiverse open for business, there’s no role for Liam. He does odd jobs around the neighborhood while Lister and Lester’s competition spirals into overdrive and their lemonade stands get increasingly, outrageously out of hand.<br />
This book is a ways off, but I'm super stoked to see it! And read it of course too.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the case of illustrating <i><b><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Once-Upon-Memory-Nina-Laden/dp/0316208167/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1472499420&sr=8-1&keywords=once+upon+a+memory">Once Upon a Memory</a></b></i> working with the writer <b><i><a href="http://ninaladen.com/">Nina Laden</a></i></b> has gone beyond a working relationship and gifted Renata with a wonderful friendship. Last week Nina and her equally talented husband Booth Buckley generously shared their lovely home and rich island lifestyle for six amazing days of superb food, drink, inspiring attitude, and creative energy.</div>

Nina is an experienced illustrator and author with a great backlist including the impressive board book, <b><i><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Peek--Who-Nina-Laden/dp/0811826023/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1472499470&sr=8-1&keywords=peek+a+who">Peek A Who</a></i></b>, which has sold over a million copies. A few years ago Renata was honoured to be the first artist that Nina had shared her writing with. Giving up your story can't be easy for any artist. And is particularly challenging for someone so passionate about their work like Nina. </div>

Just writing a book may seem easier – a picture book story can sometimes write itself in a day, where as illustrating a book is always going to take months to do! But writing is a labor of love, and truthfully, rarely does come easily. So giving it to another has to be daunting. But with the right people working together, wonderful things can happen.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Nina's island home is a wonderful place for it to happen. She loves walking the beach looking for interesting stones and letting her imagination run free exploring ideas and stories. Renata loved it too, although she found it a challenge to find a unique rock such as a shiny agate among the multitudes of plain stones on the beach. The process was an apt analogy to writing.</div>

There are lot's of ideas for books but finding the one that speaks to you and is unique is a challenge. Renata and Nina are hoping to find such a story to work together on again. They haven't yet, but if they keep beach combing their imaginations they will find something interesting. In the meantime Nina's next book to be illustrated by another is <b><i><a href="https://www.amazon.com/If-I-Had-Little-Dream/dp/1481439243/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1472499509&sr=8-1&keywords=if+i+had+a+little+dream">If I Had A Little Dream</a></i></b> which is illustrator <b><i><a href="http://www.melissacastrillon.co.uk/">Melissa Castrillon</a></i></b>'s debut book – we've had a sneak peak and it's an impressive debut!</div>

As you can see in the pictures above the building is currently under construction as is our plans. The basic concept is to create a space that is a blank canvas. A versatile studio environment that can be utilized for a variety of creative activities such as workshops, a gallery exhibition space, or to make art and design. </div>

What's next? We want to start programming and scheduling right now! We're estimating we will be ready to roll in early 2017. Renata has three brand new books to be released starting this November. We are opening a collaborative art studio in November. And we are working on a book together which I am writing and Renata is illustrating. To better serve these activities I am combining our blogs with the goal that we will be posting interesting stuff on a regular basis. There will be some changes to this blog but it will still be the place to see what Renata is up too.<br />

how about a new book for a new year!<br />
<br />
<b>Waiting for Snow</b> is a lovely story written by <a href="http://www.marshadianearnold.com/">Marsha Diane Arnold</a>. It's from the same publishing team that brought about The Quiet Book series. As with those stories Renata had super fun creating pictures that add another layer to the storytelling. She also had a lot of fun drawing some new characters including Badger and Possum, she can't wait for readers to meet them. But she'll have to wait a wee bit, the book comes out this November 2016.<br />
<br />
<i>"Badger cannot wait one more minute for it to snow. When his friend Hedgehog explains that everything comes in its time, Badger is unconvinced and impatient as ever. But Badger’s friends have a few tricks up their sleeves to try and get the snow’s attention and distract their pal in the meantime. Though in the end Badger sees there’s no trick—only waiting—until at last, it’s time."</i><br />

Happy New Year! We had a quiet (and lovely) holidays at home this year. It gave us time to talk and reminisce. Renata's good at telling stories of her childhood – so good I decided to draw this web comic about her memories of the christmas holidays. It was fun and I am planning to do more.</div>

I have to say I've never seen Renata work quite so hard on a book, she was putting some long (but fun) hours to finish it on time. It's coming out next fall/winter 2016.<br />
<br />
Here's a spot from the book featuring one of here new adorable characters.<br />

We named the show Eat Sleep PAINT after one of the artists mentioned the phrase in a twitter post. The name stuck despite the fact that Renata will be showing drawings(!) but Eat Sleep DRAW doesn't sound as good as Eat Sleep PAINT when you shorten it (E.S.D. versus E.S.P.)<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This bittersweet drawing is one of the original drawings she will be exhibiting. Thanks to our friend Derek Dennett for curating and including us in this show with the other super illustrators.</div>

<br />
<i>From School Library Journal<br />PreS-Gr 2—Boom the bear cub, Twitty the robin; and Snot the snail are back for another adventure as they decide on the perfect spot to spend the day. Boom thinks the perfect spot is "this way" to the beach, where he can jump and splash, while Twitty wants to go "that way" to the mountains to hike and look. Snot brought the snack but keeps quiet as the friends disagree over which way to go. They soon discover that Snot is gone, and a trail of blueberries leads Boom and Twitty to a place they can all enjoy. Liwska's fine pencil illustrations in a subdued color palette are soft, charming, and expressive. VERDICT Readers will enjoy this journey to find the perfect spot.—Sarah Polace, Cuyahoga Public Library System, OH</i><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is a little bit more sketch process for the book. I thought this was interesting in how the composition was subtly rearranged as it progressed.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPge_fN5eNYT8JdtfmgVwVsgOcH6_55DEr-B2DpFLIcpUvmglvlB4GAlaiNs4M59JGv38hNhUWGqW7doDnGUJuv2a8IkWcgnxaxO7RWZMCTtiuSjTpWenvRQsAAOMfrs14HPKpFAon4Ww/s1600/thisway2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPge_fN5eNYT8JdtfmgVwVsgOcH6_55DEr-B2DpFLIcpUvmglvlB4GAlaiNs4M59JGv38hNhUWGqW7doDnGUJuv2a8IkWcgnxaxO7RWZMCTtiuSjTpWenvRQsAAOMfrs14HPKpFAon4Ww/s640/thisway2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Renata's first sketch is very simple, for a reason, she wants to keep her options open so as the drawing progresses she can have lots of room for spontaneous inspiration. The main purpose of the initial sketch is to communicate to her editor what she wants to draw. And another reason the drawing is kept simple is that the editors don't always agree with what the artist wants to draw, so it's not a good idea to get too emotionally invested in a sketch. (Renata does anyway!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Every artist is different in how they approach finished artwork. Some do a lot of preliminary sketches to clearly establish the composition, tracing and retracing until everything is worked out. Renata will have none of that, she puts her pencil down in one spot and starts drawing! She's at her best when she is the least prepared, it's a type of intuitive drawing that she excels at. (and not something I recommend for more mortal folk like myself!)</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Her ability to create as she goes doesn't mean that everything that she puts on paper is magically perfect, well mostly it is, but occasionally parts of the drawing don't work out or she comes up with a better idea. And that's where the computer comes in.</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As you can see above Renata decided to redraw Boom so that that he interacts more with the other characters, and thereby he becomes the center of focus, expresses more personality and character, and ultimately provides more nuanced storytelling. Instead of redrawing the entire drawing, Renata draws a new version of Boom swimming and photoshops it into the original drawing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When Renata first started illustrating she did oil painting for finished art. But one of her art directors was so enamored with her pencil drawing that he asked her if she could just color the drawing digitally. Renata wasn't that digital at the time so I showed her a comic book style of coloring using multiply in photoshop. Since then she's become such a digital master I can't even understand how she does it anymore – the best descriptor I can think of is that she does a mushy photoshopy style of coloring. But the one insider tip I can offer is that she doesn't paint the characters, she draws them with color. This is a misconception I see with a lot of beginner digital artists. They will spend years learning to draw with a pencil but when it comes to colouring they will try to paint, throwing out all that experience with drawing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
One final note, you might have noticed that she reversed the final art in the end. Ever try that with one of your drawings? Not me, everything looks wonky when I reverse my drawings! But not Renata's...</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Renata has a new book out at the end of this month, it's called <b><i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Boom-Snot-Twitty-This-That/dp/0670785776/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1433526204&sr=8-1&keywords=this+way+that+way">This Way, That Way</a></i></b>. It's super sweet with plenty of 'ahhhh' moments! It's written by Doreen Cronin and is the companion book to <b><i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Boom-Snot-Twitty-Doreen-Cronin/dp/067078575X/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1433526253&sr=8-2&keywords=boom%2C+snot%2C+twitty">Boom, Snot, Twitty</a></i></b>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I thought you would enjoy some of the process that goes into creating the lovely pictures that Renata made for <i>This Way, That Way</i>. For a change the original sketches were done right on the computer. Renata has an older Wacom Cintiq 21UX which allows her to draw directly on the screen. Once the rough sketches are approved she does a graphite drawing in her sketchbook. She scans that and then colors the drawings in photoshop. The pencil drawing is on the top layer and the white is made transparent using multiply, The colors are applied underneath using photoshop brushes. Some of Renata's trademark fuzzy drawings are applied as colors over top the drawing as well - such as the water current. The process below is pretty subtle.</div>

This one was a pretty straight forward process, I've photographed another with a bit more twists and turns that I will post next week.</div>

<div>
<br />
<br />
<div>
Oh my where to begin! It's been awhile so maybe I'll start at the end. These are some drawings Renata is doing for <a href="http://newcraftcoalition.com/"><b>New Craft Coalition</b></a> coming this May 22 and 23, it's a carefully curated collection of craft, art, and design. We are a big fans of the coalition and excited to be chosen to be included, It's going to be a lot of fun!<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnnq9LPZONtoRdSCGuP6N2nkHpK4bccly2qpFnNJ9aufU8vIwL0In22gjL-BbeeA6fkQSBJcH41J6p9cy16o8PTYxGhYzlXz8f8UiOp-rkWGjNZ95HQyxDloNOOv7_hfDY5iqxOJf8h1M/s1600/liwska_craftyllama.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="628" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnnq9LPZONtoRdSCGuP6N2nkHpK4bccly2qpFnNJ9aufU8vIwL0In22gjL-BbeeA6fkQSBJcH41J6p9cy16o8PTYxGhYzlXz8f8UiOp-rkWGjNZ95HQyxDloNOOv7_hfDY5iqxOJf8h1M/s640/liwska_craftyllama.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
But it's not all fun and games, we're also doing New Craft Coalition to do research for a new book series for Bloomsbury called <i><b>Crafty Llama</b></i>. Renata is illustrating a story I've written for her about a Llama who knits, of course, and decides to show her work at a craft fair. So it only made sense that we do a craft fair ourselves to get inspiration. Just over a week ago we also did <a href="http://www.marketcollective.ca/randmcollective/"><b>Market Collective</b></a> and Renata got some great character and story ideas from the wonderful people we met there.<br />
<br />
Doing the drawings just for the fun of it has really reenergized Renata which is good because she has a lot of exciting work ahead of her before she can even start <i><b>Crafty Llama</b></i>.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA_ALGPrKb4MzoMiisGQ1MSL2_jBh4oq7GKKPlsNRanIednpcMYzPlQyx0kSjzwlTa_KlxwALG8AVDlbqQhRjfFG-jpf5s0r6YEbArflQnVrGa2kj-_3r_jFXydfOOMKkYaZj50HldQww/s1600/liwska_dormouse.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA_ALGPrKb4MzoMiisGQ1MSL2_jBh4oq7GKKPlsNRanIednpcMYzPlQyx0kSjzwlTa_KlxwALG8AVDlbqQhRjfFG-jpf5s0r6YEbArflQnVrGa2kj-_3r_jFXydfOOMKkYaZj50HldQww/s640/liwska_dormouse.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
As we are currently waiting patiently for Summer, Renata is trying to think about winter as she works on a lovely story called <i><b>Waiting for Snow</b></i> written by Marsha Diane Arnold. It's a return for Renata working again with <i><b>The Quiet Book</b></i> editor Kate O'Sullivan at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.<br />
<br />
At the same time she is also working on a super story written by Mac Barnett called <i><b>Places To Be</b></i>. This one has been a long time coming, but the wait has been worth it and the book is going to be a wonderfully inspiring place to be!<br />
<br />
I thought I would update a story Renata just completed a few months ago called <i><b>Dormouse Dreams</b></i> written by Karma Wilson. I'm biased, of course, but each time I see the artwork on Renata's computer screen (see above) I'm blown away by the beauty of it, it's a winner.<br />
<br />
And last but not least I want to mention <i><b>This Way That Way</b></i> written by Doreen Cronin which is coming out next month. Renata had a lot of fun with this book and it shows.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
That's all for now, I'll be back soon with more on This Way, That Way.<br />

Wow, it's been way too quiet around here! It's well past time I post about what Renata has been up to this summer. I will start at the beginning, in early May she completed perhaps her most whimsical work -<b style="font-style: italic;"> Dormouse Dreams </b>written by<b style="font-style: italic;"> Karma Wilson</b>. As the name suggests it is a very dreamy book which allowed Renata to let her imagination fly free and includes fun stuff like wing walking stunt birds, foxes cross-country skiing, and a dizzying pack of wolf pups. It will be out next year sometime.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF1IWb3kOtDMTdbfAyXi_TwHlfs_DFGN_cgYkEEjcJdKYGoQyHp0hxBCZQ12R1owH0H0USlVLy_6uVJS1Fw0meKTSvTS0u6w37T3p21tOOJQslcMRaXtn_qq8BOdn0yePdgjjFS9JHzNs/s1600/icon8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF1IWb3kOtDMTdbfAyXi_TwHlfs_DFGN_cgYkEEjcJdKYGoQyHp0hxBCZQ12R1owH0H0USlVLy_6uVJS1Fw0meKTSvTS0u6w37T3p21tOOJQslcMRaXtn_qq8BOdn0yePdgjjFS9JHzNs/s1600/icon8.jpg" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>
After that we were excited to be able to attend ICON 8 - The Illustration Conference. And we were even more excited to do a short presentation. It was perhaps a little too short for Renata, she's super great at longer talks - she needs to take her time to express herself. Nonetheless it was a exciting visit as Renata got to meet many of her favourite artists (such as Calef Brown). She was particularly pleased to purchase a miniature painting by Susie Ghahremani - a cute bear with green jeans.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPMuTuDJn2ApasgGvIpAlhepZkOOY1UiJKBcLJma4NTZACe1IUtaEyIR-o4-tApGie2Ined7zuJm9RL2NTMLHCMDgyHKx5NQMediGqoVGQ_Ow8EaUi8_jO-3DKgs4l_8CGRgbRFDs4Jm4/s1600/boomsnot2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPMuTuDJn2ApasgGvIpAlhepZkOOY1UiJKBcLJma4NTZACe1IUtaEyIR-o4-tApGie2Ined7zuJm9RL2NTMLHCMDgyHKx5NQMediGqoVGQ_Ow8EaUi8_jO-3DKgs4l_8CGRgbRFDs4Jm4/s1600/boomsnot2.jpg" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>
The rest of the summer she completed the second Boom, Snot, Twitty book - <b style="font-style: italic;">This Way, That Way </b>written by<b style="font-style: italic;"> Doreen Cronin</b>. I think I have mentioned before that although illustrating picture books can seem a pleasant way to pass the time, it's not always that way for Renata - each book is a near insurmountable task. Until she uploads the final image, she's never sure she will be able to complete a book. But so far she always does! She just uploaded the final image last week.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmuWnRVakxyA_BCBcIaELAknJzqm_KLYbwBEyKCJGjyFU9XEza46TtiTPqJEUQrRqw3Td74BhFo7mRYe8nS2CSOD0iIyePOZgrMPR9ryT41mTtoy7Vu2XUz1TyC5L4ppZtsERij0dYeF0/s1600/macandrenata.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmuWnRVakxyA_BCBcIaELAknJzqm_KLYbwBEyKCJGjyFU9XEza46TtiTPqJEUQrRqw3Td74BhFo7mRYe8nS2CSOD0iIyePOZgrMPR9ryT41mTtoy7Vu2XUz1TyC5L4ppZtsERij0dYeF0/s1600/macandrenata.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
With the summer winding down, Renata is winding up for her next adventure. She's been looking forward to working on her next book since the day signed up for it, more than a year and a half ago. It's written by the amazing Mac Barnett, and I have to say it's a super story and perfect for Renata. She loves to work with manuscripts that allow her to add her own story through her pictures. We had a chance to have lunch with Mac in Berkley after the illustration conference and he mentioned that when he writes picture books he is mindful of leaving something for the illustrator's pictures to tell. I was going to post a snippet of one of the drawings, but I remembered that Renata wouldn't want to jinx it before the editor has seen the drawings!wronghandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12896905820693680157noreply@blogger.com0
